A registration needed to stream BBC online

Every year thousands of people stream BBC content online without paying a TV license in the United Kingdom. This is true for people both in the UK and abroad. Now BBC wants to make an end to that, and within the coming weeks you will need to be a registered user in order to stream BBC content on the BBC iPlayer.

For a long time everything you have needed in order to stream BBC iPlayer online is to click and confirm that you have an actual BBC license. No further background information was needed, you just needed to lie a little bit. BBC has now realized that thousands of people claim to have a valid BBC license without having one, and for that reason you will soon need to register and validate your BBC license in order to stream BBC online.

BBC iPlayer only works in the UK
You get this error message if you try to watch BBC iPlayer from abroad

How this will actually work is still unknown, and whether or not you will be able to somehow fake your ID and address in order to stream BBC from abroad is yet another question that still remains unanswered.

Whenever the registration is implemented and a registration is required in order to stream BBC online I will update this article in order to be able to tell you how to stream BBC from abroad, even after the registration is needed. Hopefully there will be a way, but that still remains a question of the future.

    1. You need a registration at the moment, but you can registerer wherever you might be in the world, just set your postal code to somewhere in the UK and it will work (together with a VPN).
