John Malkovich (BBC) vs David Suchet (ITV)

I have recently watched all the three episodes of The ABC Murders on BBC, starring John Malkovich as Hercule Poirot. And then, by a coincidence, I noticed that you can watch lots of Hercule Poirot episodes on ITV as well. Not the John Malkovich kind of Poirot, but the original series starring David Suchet as Hercule Poirot.

So, which channel do you prefer? Luckily, you do not have to pick a favorite. But, if you consider original content, BBC is for sure a better channel than ITV. There are some great productions on ITV as well, but they are not even close at being as good as BBC when it comes to popular TV productions. If we forget about The ABC Murders for a second, BBC has so many other original programs at their platform, produced by them, making ITV look like a little dwarf compared to them.

Of course, ITV has had some great treats throughout the years as well, and let us not forget the amazing Downton Abbey, one of the best TV series of all time. But, still – BBC is a way better channel if you want to watch original content. Bodyguard was their latest hit with Richard Madden, but besides this one, BBC also is the home of Silent Witnesses, Dr. Who, and lots of other great series.

David Suchet vs John Malkovich

If I had to choose between BBC and ITV based on the performance of David Suchet as Hercule Poirot and John Malkovich as Hercule Poirot, I would probably go for ITV. I had a good time watching The ABC Murders on BBC, but it wasn’t an unforgetable experience. I actually had a much better time watching the original Poirot stories with David Suchet. I haven’t really watched those on ITV, but I watched them on my local TV station during my childhood.

Maybe I would judge it all differently if I hadn’t grown up with David Suchet as my image of Poirot, but still – he had a style, a smile, and a way of speaking that made me prefer him a lot to the image John Malkovich gives me of Poirot.

But, this doesn’t just have to do with the fact that I cannot stand other actors in the role as Poirot. Because, as I watched The Murder on the Orient Express a few months ago. In that movie, Kenneth Branagh plays the role as Hercule Poirot, and I had no trouble digesting him in the role as all. But, it was something about the way Poirot is portrayed in The ABC Murders on BBC that gave me a hard time accepting him.
